DSS busts ISIS cell in Kano, arrests five

DSS 2
The Department of Security Service (DSS) has busted ISIS training cells in Kano.
Five persons were arrested on their way to Libya and other Africa States.
The State Director of DSS, Abdullahi Bello Chiranchi, said that the arrest was a remarkable breakthrough at frustrating move by terrorists to make Kano an ISI training ground. He revealed that those arrested were indigenes of Kogi State moving to Libya, Morocco and other places that might have traces of ISIS fighters.
He did not however disclose their names.
Mr. Chiranchi also said a nine-man international cattle rustling, armed robbery, kidnapping and car-snatching gang was arrested.
He said the gang had been terrorising Kano, Kaduna and residents of Niger Republic.
According to him, those who arrested include some persons who broke into the house of a former National Security Adviser, Mukthar Mohammed, a retired air vice marshal.
The SSS director explained that a Nigerian, Suleiman Mohammad, who was one of those arrested, was allegedly supplying arms to his gang from Niger Republic.
Mr. Chiranchi disclosed that two out of the four specially-made pistols recovered from the gang belonged to Nigerien security officials.
He also said a man, Kabiru Hamisu, who is allegedly an messenger at Sheik Isiyaku Rabiu House and who was accused of providing information about Mr. Rabiu’s, was arrested.
Mr. Hamisu was also alleged to be leading a gang of armed robbers which broke into Abdusamad Rabiu office and made away with cash meant for Zakkat.
Officials of the United States government were reported Thursday as saying there was no clear evidence to show that the Nigerian terror group, Boko Haram, has major link with ISIS, saying Boko Haram was merely using its avowed allegiance to ISIS for branding.

Ogoni Visit: Fayose Says Buhari Has Surrendered to Militants, Calls for Dialogue

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has said President Muhammadu Buhari’s cancellation of his scheduled official visit to Rivers State to flag off clean-up Ogoniland was an embarrassment.
He has therefore, urged him to dialogue with the Niger Delta Militants, especially the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) in order to end hostilities in the oil rich region and save the Nigerian economy from imminent collapse.
Fayose said Buhari’s failure to attend the flag-off on Thursday apparently because of threat from the Niger Delta militants was a demonstration that the President had surrendered to the superior powers of the militants.
It should be recalled that the NDA had warned President Buhari to stay away from the Niger Delta region if he desired to live.‎
According to a statement issued by Lere Olayinka, the governor’s Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Fayose said it was shameful and embarrassing that the President, a retired miliitary general, could succumb to threat from militants despite that he told Nigerians that he was going to lead from the fronts
.
Fayose, who wondered why the President was not always interested in visiting states in the country as against his penchant for overseas trips, added that it was time that the President stopped acting like a foreign president.
He said it was obvious that the President’s approach to civil unrest of any kind under the government was causing more security problems in the country, adding that “the President cannot afford to continue to talk tough on issues that dialogue can resolve.”
The governor said: “Now that the President has surrendered to the threat and intimidation of the Niger Delta Avengers, he should emulate late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua by having a round-table talks with the Niger Delta militants.
“By not going to Ogoni today (Thursday) because of threat from the NDA, our president has shown that he is actually afraid of the militants and the best thing to do in a situation like this is to dialogue with the militants so as to save Nigeria economy from imminent collapse.
“It also shows that the President’s ability to secure Nigeria and its people is suspect because if the President could succumb to threat from militants and abandon his official function for his deputy, ordinary Nigerians should seek help elsewhere.
“The President should therefore save Nigeria the agony of military misadventure in the Niger Delta by holding dialogue with the militants with a view to resolving their grievances.”Fayose also reiterated that “the Niger Delta region as at today is still the golden goose laying the golden egg on which all other regions are surviving,” saying “diversification as good as it sounds, takes time. We need to appreciate these regions as our only source of income.”

Revealed: How DSS stopped Buhari from attending Ogoni cleanup flagg off..Is he a coward general

Facts have emerged on why President Muhammadu Buhari cancelled his scheduled official visit to Rivers State to flag off the clean-up Ogoniland programme.
The President was billed to personally preside over the flag off on Thursday but sent his Vice, Yemi Osinbajo, to represent him at the eleventh hour.
However, presidency sources told our correspondent in Abuja Thursday night that the cancellation may not be unconnected to the intriguing power play by the Agencies in charge of the nation’s security architecture.
According to sources, the leadership of the Department of State Services, DSS (Nigeria’s Secret Police) was said to have advised the President against undertaking the trip despite assurances by the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) and the Military High Command.
Ahead of the visit, the presidential advanced team comprising protocol, security, medical and the media had landed in Port Harcourt and Ogoniland, waiting to receive President Buhari.
Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, had also on Wednesday during a broadcast to the people of the state assured Mr. President of a rousing welcome, saying they were ready to receive him.
One of the presidency source who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “There was no reason for the DSS not to have allowed President Buhari undertake the trip” said adding that there was no apparent security threat to the president’s life despite statement credited to the new Niger Delta militant group, the Avengers threatening the life of the President.
“It is most unfortunate that a well planned trip that would have endeared the president to the South-South people was aborted at the last moment.
“This historic trip would have remained indelible in the minds of the people. The People of Ogoniland as well as the entire Niger Delta people were waiting anxiously to receive the president only to be told that he would be represented by the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
“The security operatives that advised him against coming to the Niger Delta just destroyed the goodwill Mr. President would have enjoyed among the people. It is most unfortunate.
“The advice was also designed to put the National Security Adviser (NSA) to the president in bad light, as one who doesn’t know what he is doing. They have been trying to undermine his office ever since but had repeatedly failed.
“This idea of ascribing health reasons to Mr. President’s inability to travel is not healthy for the government.
“It portrays the President as a sick President and that is not the case with President Buhari.
The source stated further that “the advice was also designed to put the National Security Adviser (NSA) to the president in bad light, as one who doesn’t know what he is doing. They have been trying to undermine his office ever since but had repeatedly failed”.
President Buhari had on assumption of office in May 2015, assured that he would implement the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report, which recommended the clean-up of Ogoniland that has been devastated by long years of oil spillages.

Nigeria's Buhari cancels visit to oil-producing Niger Delta-government source: Is he scared?

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has cancelled at the last minute a visit planned for Thursday to the oil-producing Niger Delta, which has been hit by a wave of militant attacks, a government source said.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will instead visit the restive southern region to launch a cleanup programme of the Ogoniland, an area badly hit by oil spills, the source said, without giving a reason for Buhari's cancellation.
Buhari had already skipped a visit to the commercial capital Lagos in the south last month at the last minute. Posters with his picture had been already hung up to welcome the president before his spokesman cited "scheduling" difficulties.
It would have been the first visit of the former military ruler to the Delta since taking office in May last year. Critics have accused Buhari, a Muslim from the north, of ignoring the predominately Christian south.
The southern Delta swamps have been hit by a series of militant attacks on oil and gas pipelines which have brought Nigeria's oil output to a 20-year low.
Hours after the announcement of Buhari's visit to the swamps on Tuesday the Niger Delta Avengers militant group, which has claimed several attacks on Chevron and Royal Dutch Shell facilities, issued a warning to oil firms that their "facilities and personnel will bear the brunt of our fury".
The Avengers have accused Buhari of ignoring local problems.
Buhari said on Sunday the government would hold talks with leaders in Nigeria's main oil-producing region to address their grievances, in a bid to stop a surge in pipeline attacks.
Residents in the swamp areas have for years complained about oil industry pollution and about economic marginalisation by the government.
Local officials and Western allies such as Britain have told Buhari that moving army reinforcements to the Delta region would not be enough to stop the attacks and that the population's grievances should be dealt with.

PDP Jubilates: As Buhari set to launch Jonathan’s Achievements

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has stated that the Abuja-Kaduna rail project, constructed by former President, Goodluck Jonathan, would be launched by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Amaechi, who spoke with journalists after a test ride of the rail project on Wednesday, June 1, said that Buhari would be commissioning the project in July and would be ready for commercial use later in July this year.
This is coming as a vindication of the development strides of the Peoples Democratic Party-led, PDP, government, during the Jonathan era.
Amaechi, had earlier assured Nigerians in February, that the project was 100 percent complete, and would be ready for launch in May 2016, including the Lagos – Calabar project, constructed by Jonathan.
“The Lagos – Calabar project was awarded by former President Goodluck Jonathan and we are also flying with it. What we are doing is implementing those projects that have not been implemented for so many years,” the minister said.
“What we are doing is implementation of what we met in office. We are not among those who will abandon good ideas.
“If we see an idea that is good, we will adopt it. The Lagos – Kano project was awarded by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and we are flying with it”.
However, he said that the Buhari administration was committed to ensuring the sustenance of the rail project upon completion in July.
“We are looking at bringing Mr. President to commission in July. In two weeks time, they will do the test run of the track without passengers, after that two weeks, it will take another two weeks to do test run with passengers and it will be free of charge, and that will take us to the end of June.
“Which means by first week in July, we believe that the president will come and flag it off for commercial service,” he said.
The former Rivers governor also said the cost of conveying passengers will be subsidized. He however, noted that the details of cost were still being worked out.
“Is it sustainable? The answer is yes, because it is on its own. If you say whether it will be subsidized, it will be. We are working out the details of how much it will cost to carry passengers and to maintain it,” he said.
Amaechi, also said that the test ride indicated that a part of the phase was already completed.
“At the beginning we had done the test run, but then it was not completed. Today it has been completed. So today is the first test run that we are doing on the completed standard gauge.
“The signaling communication stations are all completed now, so you can actually technically say today is the first day of test running the completed project,” he said.
He pledged that the ministry of transportation will partner with the Nigeria Identity Management Commission, NIMC, to ensure smooth registration of passengers without hitches.

Buhari’s leadership style will break Nigeria, accelerate actualisation of Biafra – IPOB

buhari
The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has declared that the leadership style of President Muhammad Buhari will speedily bring about the actualisation of the sovereign State of Biafra.
‬
‪
IPOB’s stance was contained in a statement signed its spokespersons, Barrister Emma Nmezu and Dr Clifford Chukwuemeka Iroanya.
The group claimed that Buhari had done more than any past leader in the history of Nigeria to divide and dismember the country.According to the IPOB, Buhari’s leadership had significantly catalyzed and fast-forwarded the restoration of the nation of Biafra.‬
‪The statement reads, “Without the efforts of Buhari, the crescendo reached today on the return of the nation of Biafra would not have been possible.
“From bombing of Cross River and Akwa Ibom States with the banned NAPALM bombs, through the genocidal killings of Biafrans from August 2015 to February 2016, and to the utter disregard of court orders, Buhari has steadily and consistently worked in the favour of the re-emergence of Biafra.
‬
“The irrelevance to which former President Goodluck Jonathan consigned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) was reversed by Buhari, all to the advantage of Biafrans.‬”The group claimed that Buhari’s blood-thirsty nature, among several other factors, were propelling him to quicken the restoration of Biafra.
‬
IPOB said, “Among these are the blood-thirsty nature of Buhari and the neo-Hitler attitudes of this despot. Another big factor is the misinformation he received from his incompetent Department of State Services (DSS) who deceived him into believing that incarcerating the leader of IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, will work in his favour.
‬
“There is also his belief in using weapons and brute force to solve simple political problems. Today, it is evident that if anybody is in danger in the entire Nigeria, it is attributable to Buhari. This man is an incarnate of Mohamed Siad Barre of Somalia and the outcome is the ongoing dismemberment of Nigeria and the quickened restoration of the nation of Biafra.‬
‪”Just like his role model Mohamed Siad Barre, Buhari has indulged in crimes against humanity and in selective cum partisan indictments. For instance, he ordered the unlawful arrest, detention and public intimidation of Femi Fani-Kayode for standing up for the truth when most Yoruba so-called elites are terrified to speak.
‬
“The condemnable barbaric slaughter of hundreds of innocent Shiite Muslims in Zaria and unwarranted illegal detention of their leader Zakzaky are all contributing to the calamitous collapse of the Lugard-created Nigeria. Why Fani-Kayode is being detained for alleged fraud while Chibuike Amechi and Bola Ahmed Tinubu are allowed to walk freely is beyond human comprehension.‬
‪”Why arrest Fani-Kayode, a Yoruba man, when a Hausa-Fulani man called Ibrahim Lamorde, a former Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) boss that stole Four Trillion Naira is free to enjoy his loot? Why arrest Fani-Kayode for corruption when Halliburton scandal involving mainly Hausa-Fulani people is yet to be investigated?‬
‪”From his terrible public utterances, to his divisive and sectional government policies, through his placement of only Hausa-Fulani people in his “kitchen cabinet“, to killing of Biafrans and Shiite Muslims, Buhari has worked tirelessly for the balkanization of Nigeria.”‬
‪Urging the President to continue with his style of leadership, IPOB stressed that the actualisation of Biafra was only a matter of time.
‬
‪”The Indigenous People of Biafra are happy for this leadership style of Buhari. We pray that he continues unceasingly.
‬
‪”Even the illegal incarceration and unconstitutional prosecution of the leader of IPOB have worked maximally to the favour of Biafrans. We urge Buhari to continue and not to stop because we want to see the independent nation of Biafra come very soon and Buhari is speedily bringing it to fruition,” the statement said.‬

The truth no one tells President Buhari

On Friday, May 20th, 2016, Dr. Yemi Kale, the Statistician-General of the Federation and head of the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS), revealed that Nigeria’s economy had not grown in the first quarter of the year but had rather shrunk to its lowest level in 25 years! Since the announcement was made, there has been various reactions with pundits pointing at this or the other as being the cause of this setback. But I am convinced beyond any reasonable doubt that this negative trend owes more to President Muhammadu Buhari’s utterances on our economy and polity than to any other single causative factor.
In the last 11 months, the president had traversed the globe and has spoken about Nigeria’s economy as if he was the chief undertaker of our polity rather than the chief marketer that he is meant to be. Of what benefit is it to the president’s agenda or to Nigeria’s economic well-being for him to go to foreign nations and instead of highlighting the positive things that are happening in Nigeria, he begins to regale his hosts with the most unsavoury stories about Nigeria. And some of the stories the president tells are just that-tales. They are not factual. At best they are arguable.
You go to India for a summit where other world leaders are competing with you for the attention of venture capitalists and foreign investors and while your counterparts are talking about how great their countries are, you tell the audience how everybody in your country is corrupt except you and oh, can they come and invest in your country? Only a foolish investor would go and invest in a country whose president thinks his citizens are ‘criminals’ (as the president said to the Telegraph of UK in February) and whose officials are ‘fantastically corrupt’ (as the president said in agreement with British PM David Cameron when questioned by Sky News).
The president speaks on the Nigerian economy and polity without any filters and his comments are causing his chickens to roost with devastating consequences for all of us. Never in the history of Nigeria has there been such a divestment of investment as we have seen in the past year. Truworths has pulled out of Nigeria, Virgin Atlantic has closed up shop, Iberia is pulling out, RenCap is pulling funds from Nigeria, both Alquity Investment Management Ltd. and Duet Asset Management Ltd. are divesting their Nigeria holding.
Zenith Bank laid off 1,200 staff, FCMB let go 700 employees, Ecobank sacked 50 per cent of its top management staff. The President of the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Tony Ejinkeonye, revealed that in just two months, 50,000 staff were laid off in Abuja alone. The results are telling. A little over a year ago, Nigeria was projected by CNNMoney to be the third fastest growing economy in the world behind China and Qatar, yet just two weeks ago, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) released its World Economic Outlook and Nigeria is not even among the top 15 fastest growing economies in Africa let alone the world!
And when you try to raise the alarm, the refrain from the government and its horde of unofficial spokesmen is that the downturn is caused by the fall in crude prices. Yet this logic is flawed. The government’s own economic monitoring agency, the NBS itself reported that the exponential growth Nigeria enjoyed especially from 2012 to its 2014 climax (when our economy overtook South Africa to be Africa’s largest economy) was spurred not by the oil sector, but “this growth was largely driven by improved activities in the telecommunications, building and construction, hotel and restaurant and business services” to quote the NBS.
Yes, oil accounts for something like 90-95 per cent of our foreign exchange revenues but it only accounts for a mere 15 per cent of our GDP. The service sector and the commercial and real sector are the engine or used to be the engine of our economic growth. But these sectors are heavily capital and technology intensive and require cooperation with foreign investors and when you consistently bad mouth your economy and its regulators investor confidence tanks and the result is what we are seeing today. I support President Buhari’s anti-corruption war but it should not be a substitute for sound economic ideas or policies.
And the way the president has carried out his anti-corruption crusade is in itself self sabotaging and feeds the narrative of those who say that Nigeria is far too complex and dynamic a country to be run by someone who should be quietly collecting his pension. And President Buhari’s behaviour is flowing down the pyramid. There is a contagious effect in the utterances of major figures in his administration.
For instance, when Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo tells the world that the Goodluck Jonathan administration looted $15 billion in security contracts, many people in the West who like to read such stories to justify their hidden opinion that the Black man cannot govern himself, will clap for him. Coming from the nation’s own vice-president, the Western press will report the news as a fact. At that level, such a statement carries the weight of an admission. But then ask yourself, what was the entire security budget for the five years that Jonathan was president of Nigeria?
In 2011, defence and security had a budget of N348 billion or just over $2 billion. In 2012, it skyrocketed to N921 billion or $5.7 billion. It grew to N1.055 trillion in 2013 or $6 billion. In 2014, N968 billion was budgeted for defence and security or $5.8 billion. The 2015 budget was passed in April and President Jonathan handed over to President Buhari a month later so I cannot see how the previous administration could have ‘chopped’ that money. So of the $19 billion budgeted for defence and security while former President Jonathan was in office, how could $15 billion have been looted when more than half that amount went to paying salaries?
Did Vice-President Osinbajo think this accusation through? The president and his deputy with their cabinet and their political appointees are not a court. They cannot convict anybody. As such, when they speak this way, what it amounts to is propagandised activity. In an anti-corruption war, one must separate activity from results. Results are convictions from a court after due and diligent prosecution. And when you look at it from that perspective, this administration has been delivering activity and not results.
For instance, then candidate Muhammadu Buhari and his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), had called the subsidy payments made by the Jonathan administration a fraud! They claimed that the amount was too high at N1.1 trillion in 2014. Well if fuel subsidy had been a fraud, the first thing that should have happened naturally when President Buhari took over was that the amount should have reduced, but it DID NOT reduce. As a matter of fact, Nigeria spent over $5 billion on fuel subsidy in 2015 and President Buhari was in power for most of that year!
The point I am making here is that the elections are over. President Buhari and his administration should stop tarnishing the image of Nigeria in the mistaken belief that they are rubbishing the person of former President Jonathan. The president should take in the big picture and realise that you need to be below somebody in order to pull him down. One year has come and gone and has seemingly been wasted pointing fingers in blame instead of at solutions. The time for blame games have gone.
Only last month, Buhari complained that the Sahara desert was advancing southward. He should also realise that that is not the only thing going south. The Nigerian economy is going south at perhaps a faster rate and blaming others for it will never stem the tide. The president should focus on marketing his plans and policies when he travels abroad instead of de marketing the plans and policies of former President Jonathan’s administration. It has been said that if you want a conversation with a habitual complainer to end abruptly, just ask him how he intends to fix the problem. That is the question Nigerians want answered by President Buhari.
Under former President Jonathan, Nigeria’s economy exploded and became the largest economy in Africa and the 24th largest economy in the world. Let it not be said that under President Buhari that economy collapsed like a pack of clouds because the hand that should have steered the ship was too busy pointing an accusing finger.

The Latest: Slain girl's schoolmates will run in her honor

The Latest on developments related to the abduction and killing of an 11-year-old girl in New Mexico (all times local):
1:10 p.m.
Schoolmates of an 11-year-old girl who was kidnapped and killed on the Navajo Nation this week are preparing to run roughly a mile in her honor as part of the Shiprock Marathon.
School and race officials say about 75 students from Ojo Amarillo Elementary School will lead the first wave of 450 children in an honor run Friday evening.
At the end, they'll release 500 yellow balloons. Yellow was one of fifth-grader Ashlynne Mike's favorite colors.
Authorities say she was abducted Monday along her school bus route in an isolated, agricultural community near Shiprock, New Mexico.
Her body was found the next day in the desert about 25 miles away. A 27-year-old man has been arrested in her death.
Local school district spokesman James Preminger says last year, Ashlynne participated in the run that's now being dedicated in her memory.

Mourners at the funeral of an 11-year-old Navajo girl who was abducted and killed this week wept as a video played showing support for her from across the country.
Images of people releasing balloons, holding vigils and singing in remembrance of Ashlynne Mike flashed on the screen in New Mexico's Farmington Civic Center. Ashlynne was also shown playing the xylophone.
A headstone created for Ashlynne read "our little angel in heaven."
Some 1,600 people attended the service with speeches delivered in Navajo and English and as many people waited outside watching it on monitors.
Ashlynne's parents and siblings sat on stage alongside local, state and tribal leaders.
A funeral escort to the burial site included dozens of motorcycle riders.

Older siblings of 11-year-old Ashlynne Mike told a crowd gathered for her funeral Friday that they wish the alert had gone out sooner. The audience erupted into applause.
Authorities were notified around 7 p.m. Monday that Ashlynne and a younger brother were missing. Authorities say the two had been lured into a van by a man offering to take them to a movie.
The brother was freed and showed up at the Shiprock police station around 7:15 p.m. and provided a description of the kidnapper.
An Amber Alert was issued at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. Ashlynne's body was found later that day south of the monolith known as Shiprock.

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez joined thousands of people Friday in mourning a Navajo girl who was abducted and killed this week.
During a funeral Friday, Martinez recalled Ashlynne Mike as a budding pianist and xylophone player who wanted to share her musical talents with the world. The 11-year-old girl was a fifth-grader at Ojo Amarillo Elementary School.
Authorities say she was killed after she and her brother were lured into a van near their school bus stop Monday. Her brother was freed, but Ashlynne's body was found near the Navajo Nation community of Shiprock the next day.
Martinez turned to Ashlynne's brother and thanked him for his braveness in providing authorities a description of the kidnapper and said Ashlynne would be proud.
Tom Begaye Jr. has been charged with murder and kidnapping in Ashlynne's death.

US mulls selling Nigeria attack planes

The United States is considering selling Nigeria ground attack planes to help fight Boko Haram rebels, officials said Friday, despite concerns over the local military's human rights record.
Nigeria's Western allies have vowed to assist the West African giant in its fight against the brutal Islamist group, but have been cautious of providing arms to troops regularly accused of extrajudicial killings.
Washington is now, however, contemplating selling Nigeria a dozen A-29 Super Tucano ground attack planes of the type US contractors have supplied to Afghanistan to help it strike Taliban guerrillas.
US officials would not publicly confirm the plan, as it has not been formally approved or explained to Congress, but said Washington is looking for ways to help President Muhammadu Buhari's government.
Washington has longstanding concerns about Nigeria's rights record and the government is prevented by law, under a 1997 amendment authored by Senator Patrick Leahy, from arming units that act with impunity.
"We are committed to implementing the letter and spirit of the Leahy Law, and will not provide assistance to any unit for which there is credible information of a gross violation of human rights," a senior administration official told AFP.
"We provide training and other assistance to numerous Nigerian security force units not implicated in human rights violations and we believe that assistance has and will have a significant impact on Nigeria's fight to defeat Boko Haram."
Buhari, a former military dictator, was elected to the Nigerian presidency last year, replacing the incumbent Goodluck Jonathan, whose government was widely derided as incompetent and corrupt.
Since Buhari came to office, the United States has sought new ways to help out in the struggle against Boko Haram, but has proceeded cautiously because of the Nigerian military's reputation for brutality.
"As a matter of policy, we do not comment on proposed US defense sales or transfers until they have been formally notified to Congress," said David McKeeby, spokesman for the State Department's bureau of political-military affairs.
"Nigeria is a strategic partner of the United States and we continue to work closely together on security matters," he said.
"We provide a range of assistance to Nigerian authorities, including advisors, intelligence, training, survivor support services and advice on strategic communications."
Boko Haram's insurgency began in northeast Nigeria and has spread to parts of neighboring Niger, Chad and Cameroon -- where French and US forces have been more active in helping local armies fight the rebels.
More than 20,000 people have been killed since fighting began in 2009, many of them in large-scale slaughters of civilians by insurgents, but some in heavy-handed military operations.
