Tanzania: Police Arrest 15 in Connection With Zanzibar Acid Attacks

Zanzibari police said Monday (September 16th) they arrested 15 people in connection with acid attacks on Catholic priest Joseph Anselm Mwangamba last Friday and two British volunteer teachers last month.
Some of the suspects were youths who were seeking to leave the area and join al-Shabaab, said Zanzibar police commissioner Mussa Ali Mussa.
"We are investigating these incidents, and we have 15 people on our list," Mussa said according to AFP, adding that some had been released on bail pending possible charges. "We arrested the youths when they were travelling to join al-Shabaab and they admitted they were going for jihad."
Mussa said police were also "finalising compiling evidence before charging three people" with the attack on the British volunteer teachers, Kate Gee and Kirstie Trup, but declined to give further details on the probe and said it was still too early to determine whether the attacks were religious in nature.
